Summary

Noam Chomsky’s backpocket classic on wartime propaganda and opinion control begins by asserting two models of democracy—one in which the public actively participates， and one in which the public is manipulated and controlled。 According to Chomsky， "propaganda is to democracy as the bludgeon is to a totalitarian state，" and the mass media is the primary vehicle for delivering propaganda in the United States。 From an examination of how Woodrow Wilson’s Creel Commission "succeeded， within six months， in turning a pacifist population into a hysterical， war-mongering population，" to Bush Sr。's war on Iraq， Chomsky examines how the mass media and public relations industries have been used as propaganda to generate public support for going to war。 Chomsky further touches on how the modern public relations industry has been influenced by Walter Lippmann’s theory of "spectator democracy，" in which the public is seen as a "bewildered herd" that needs to be directed， not empowered; and how the public relations industry in the United States focuses on "controlling the public mind，" and not on informing it。 Media Control is an invaluable primer on the secret workings of disinformation in democratic societies。

عندما تتبول الحكومات على الشعوب ، يأتي دور الإعلام في إقناعهم بأنها تمطر هذه المقولة التي تُنسب لـ شي جيفارا هي ما كان يرن في أذني أثناء تمعني لصفحات هذا الكتاب 。 نعوم تشومسكي كاتب ذائع الصيت بين المختصين و العامة على حد سواء ، و أنا التي أنتمي للفئة الأخيرة كنت بالفعل قد قرأت عدة مقالات و شاهدت بعض المحاضرات التي ألقاها تشومسكي في مناسبات مختلفة 。 لكن هذا الكتاب هو أول قراءة فعلية لأحد مؤلفاته التي حسب ويكيبيديا يتجاوز عددها المائة ، و لعلني إنتقيته دون كتب شومسكي المائة لسببين : أوّلُـهما ضآلة عندما تتبول الحكومات على الشعوب ، يأتي دور الإعلام في إقناعهم بأنها تمطر هذه المقولة التي تُنسب لـ شي جيفارا هي ما كان يرن في أذني أثناء تمعني لصفحات هذا الكتاب 。 نعوم تشومسكي كاتب ذائع الصيت بين المختصين و العامة على حد سواء ، و أنا التي أنتمي للفئة الأخيرة كنت بالفعل قد قرأت عدة مقالات و شاهدت بعض المحاضرات التي ألقاها تشومسكي في مناسبات مختلفة 。 لكن هذا الكتاب هو أول قراءة فعلية لأحد مؤلفاته التي حسب ويكيبيديا يتجاوز عددها المائة ، و لعلني إنتقيته دون كتب شومسكي المائة لسببين : أوّلُـهما ضآلة و صغر حجمه في إعتقاد مني أنه سيكون وجبة خفيفة لكنه كان مأدبة ، و ثانيهما الفكرة المثيرة للإهتمام التي يستعرضـ هـا الكاتب المتمثلة في دور هراوة الديموقراطين او الدعاية المغرضة  او النقحرة المعروفة ' البروباغندا ' في إستغفال الشعوب و التأثير على قرارتهم و أرائهم و دفعهم إلى ما ليسوا مقتنعين بضرورتـه ٫ الحرب كمثال ، كذا و دورها في خلق الإجماع و هندسة الرأي العام 。 مهلاً هل  يمكن إعتبار هذا الكتاب بروباجندا مضادة  ؟ صحيح ؟ لا أعتقد ، لكنك حقاً لن تعود كما كنت بعد قرائته ، و للأمانة الكتاب لم يشبع فضولي البتة ، بل و زادني حماسةً و إهتماما بالموضوع ، و دفعني للتساءل و البحث أكثر و أعتقد أن هذه نقطة للكاتب لا عليه 。 ترددت في إعطاء الكتاب النجمة الأخيرة ، لأنني رأيت أن تشومسكي كان مستعجلا إلى حد ما ، ليته توسع أكثر في شرح النماذج و الأمثلة ، كما و كان يذكر عدة اسماء لـ شخصيات و منظمات مفترضاً أن القارئ على علم مسبق بـ ها ، و أعتقد أن كون الكتاب موجه للقارئ الأمريكي بشكل خاص خلق هذه الفجوة ، أو ربما الخلل هو في ثقافتي التاريخية و السياسية الركيكة ، و أرجح الأخيرة صراحةً ، لكن لننظر للجانب المملوء من الكأس ، على الأقل جعلتني هذه الفجوة أبحث عن المعلومات و أنتزعـ هـا بنفسي 。أرشح الكتاب و بشدة ، للمهتم و لغير المهتم لأنه سيشدك أوصالك و يجبرك حتماً على الإهتمام 。 لا أعتقد أن هذه مراجعة بل هي أقرب لفضفضة 。 إلى فضفضة أخرى و لقاء آخر أترقبه مع تشومسكي مجدداً 。 。。。more

[3。5]Noam Chomsky provides an interesting take on the world of media propaganda， it's origin， reasoning， possible pros （which I believe are worth debating）， and obvious pitfalls。 He describes two types of democracies， one where every individual is a part of how the country is run， and the other in which only a small group of intellectuals run the country （think Plato's Republic） and keep the rest of the 'bewildered herd' under control through media propaganda。Even though I don't know Chomsky's p [3。5]Noam Chomsky provides an interesting take on the world of media propaganda， it's origin， reasoning， possible pros （which I believe are worth debating）， and obvious pitfalls。 He describes two types of democracies， one where every individual is a part of how the country is run， and the other in which only a small group of intellectuals run the country （think Plato's Republic） and keep the rest of the 'bewildered herd' under control through media propaganda。Even though I don't know Chomsky's position on the debate between republic and democracy， it was refreshing to see that he was able to objectively argue the deteriorating condition of media control and propaganda without explicitly taking sides。 His main focus in this book was on US policies， and more specifically US foreign policies， but the general ideas can easily extended to other scenarios。 I would love to read a 21st century update of his ideas， as a number of propaganda methods he proposes rely heavily on lack of connectivity and exchange of ideas which are now I believe streamlined by social media。One major negative for me though was the lack of proper references as the content of the book almost felt like a rambling， mind you of someone who knows what he is talking about， but ramblings nonetheless。 I wouldn't consider this book exceptional in any sense， but it did get me excited to read more of Chomsky's work。 It's a short book so acts as a litmus test for the rest of his work。 。。。more

Voice of dissent and political activist Noam Chomsky makes a case for how the mainstream media in the United States serves as a tool for propaganda to control the bewildered masses。 Chomsky focuses on how the established media instills a burning fear into the masses to justify the American government’s interventionist foreign policy of the past decades， such as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan。 Despite major news outlets such as CNN and Fox news having prominent differences on the political spec Voice of dissent and political activist Noam Chomsky makes a case for how the mainstream media in the United States serves as a tool for propaganda to control the bewildered masses。 Chomsky focuses on how the established media instills a burning fear into the masses to justify the American government’s interventionist foreign policy of the past decades， such as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan。 Despite major news outlets such as CNN and Fox news having prominent differences on the political spectrum， they both maintain unapologetically pro-war stances using the same dubious apologetics， arguing that the wars are necessary for protecting our indulgences of freedoms and liberties that would otherwise wither away。 While I do believe that Chomsky’s convictions are probably right and his arguments undoubtedly sound， the claims he makes left me unimpressed by the lack of empirical evidence to support his claims， such as the assertion that the masses are peaceful if left undisturbed， and that the media only serves the interests of the: “business party。”While reading this book， I noticed how the world of the early 2000s （when this book was published） lacked the alternative media that shapes the minds of many today。 Contemporary political pundits and public speakers such as Ben Shapiro， Jordan Peterson， and Kyle Kulinski are influential voices that have amassed significant followings through the internet。 This weakens the argument that the traditional forms of media are the only ones holding power and shaping the narrative。In conclusion， I must admit that Chomsky’s observations and insight into the power the media holds feels chilling to realize。 They have the ability to change the course of public opinion and shape the minds of an entire nation。 No other empire of the past has wielded such an amount of power。 This book was a worthwhile short read and would fully recommend it to anyone wanting an introduction to how the media is able to use propaganda to change the public’s perception of reality。 。。。more

Certainly Chomsky has controversial views on politics and subversive control by the media and other entities， but I found this to be an interesting read。 I think reading it under the presidency of Trump and his media sycophants brought many of his points home for me。

The propaganda referenced in this title is mostly about wartime propaganda。 How and why governments use propaganda to support their war efforts and why mainstream media plays along with it。 This reads more like a speech or a talk。 It's a quick read。 I don't know whether I would say it's super interesting though。 It's also a little dated with the references because a good portion of it focuses on the US propaganda around the first Iraq war。 Which was pretty interesting because I didn't know about The propaganda referenced in this title is mostly about wartime propaganda。 How and why governments use propaganda to support their war efforts and why mainstream media plays along with it。 This reads more like a speech or a talk。 It's a quick read。 I don't know whether I would say it's super interesting though。 It's also a little dated with the references because a good portion of it focuses on the US propaganda around the first Iraq war。 Which was pretty interesting because I didn't know about a lot of that detail and what was said and done at the time。 So， this book isn't a detailed analysis of how propaganda works but it's a decent quick read。 。。。more

الكتاب: السيطرة على الإعلامالمؤلف: #نعوم_تشومسكي （تعريب: اميمة عبد اللطيف）الناشر: #مكتبة_الشروق_الدوليةالسيطرة على الإعلام، الإنجازات الهائلة للبروباغندا。。 مجموعة مقالات وكتابات لأستاذ اللغويات والفيلسوف الأمريكي الشهير نعوم تشومسكي، صاحب النظرية التوليدية في اللسانيات。يناقش تشومسكي في هذا الكتاب عمل الديمقراطية والمنظومة الحاكمة في توظيف الآلة الإعلامية والسيطرة عليها، ويعني هنا تحديدًا الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية - كما يتضح لنا من الكتاب -، النموذج الديمقراطي الأشهر！يبدأ مؤلفنا بطرح تعريفين مخت الكتاب: السيطرة على الإعلامالمؤلف: #نعوم_تشومسكي （تعريب: اميمة عبد اللطيف）الناشر: #مكتبة_الشروق_الدوليةالسيطرة على الإعلام، الإنجازات الهائلة للبروباغندا。。 مجموعة مقالات وكتابات لأستاذ اللغويات والفيلسوف الأمريكي الشهير نعوم تشومسكي، صاحب النظرية التوليدية في اللسانيات。يناقش تشومسكي في هذا الكتاب عمل الديمقراطية والمنظومة الحاكمة في توظيف الآلة الإعلامية والسيطرة عليها، ويعني هنا تحديدًا الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية - كما يتضح لنا من الكتاب -، النموذج الديمقراطي الأشهر！يبدأ مؤلفنا بطرح تعريفين مختلفين للديمقراطية، الأول يعتبر أن المجتمع الديمقراطي هو الذي يملك فيه الجمهور الوسائل اللازمة للمشاركة الفعالة في إدارة شئونهم، وأن تكون وسائل الإعلام منفتحة وحرة، وهذا هو نفس المعنى اللغوي في القاموس。 أما الآخر فهو أن يمنع العامة من إدارة شئونهم وكذا من إدارة وسائل الإعلام التي يجب أن تظل تحت السيطرة المتشددة، وهذا هو المفهوم الحاكم والمعمول به، ولهذا المفهوم أساس نظري منذ القدم فهو ليس انحرافًا في التوجه السياسي، بل هو القاعدة والأصل。كانت أول بروباغندا （دعاية） سياسية في العصر الحديث في رئاسة "وودرو ويلسون" الذي انتخب رئيسًا في 1916م وفق حملته الانتخابية （سلام بدون نصر）، أثناء الحرب العالمية الأولى؛ لأن المواطنون وقتها كانوا يرون عدم الانخراط في الحرب، ولكن بتنظيم "لجنة كريل" للدعاية الحكومية انقلبت الأمور تمامًا في 6 شهور، وصار المواطنون الأمريكيين يرون أن تدمير الألمان وإبادتهم من أعلى الأولويات！لا شك أن ذلك العمل الدعائي كان ملهمًا لكثيرين ممن أتوا بعد ذلك。。 منهم المنظرين الديمقراطيين الليبراليين أمثال "والتر ليبمان" الذي كانت لديه نظرية مفصلة عن الديمقراطية التقدمية، يقول تشومسكي في تحليله لرؤية ليبمان: "هناك وظيفتان في النظم الديمقراطية: الوظيفة الأولى منوط بها أصحاب الطبقة المتخصصة، الرجال المسئولون يقومون بالتفكير وفهم التخطيط للمصالح العامة، ثم هناك أيضًا القطيع الضال！ بيد أنه وفق هذا التحليل، فإن هذا القطيع أيضًا يتمتع بوظيفة ما في النظام الديمقراطي، تلك الوظيفة - حسب تصور ليبمان - تتمثل في كونهم مشاهدين وليسوا مشاركين في الفعل。 هناك وظيفة أخرى بالإضافة لتلك المشاهدة من قبل القطيع؛ نظرًا لأنه نظام ديمقراطي في التحليل النهائي، فمن وقت لآخر يسمح لهم بالقول "نحن نريدك قائدًا لنا" ذلك لأنها ديمقراطية وليست نظامًا شموليًا، وهذا ما يطلق عليه "الانتخابات"، ولكن بعد أن يلقوا بثقلهم خلف عضو أو آخر، من الطبقة المتخصصة، ومن المفترض أن يعودوا أدراجهم على الفور ويصبحوا مشاهدين لا مشاركين للأفعال。 هذا ما يجب أن يحدث في نظام ديمقراطي سليم！"。هذه هي الفكرة الأساسية التي يدور عليها الكتاب ، ويبدو أن وراء هذه النظرة الديمقراطية منطلق أخلاقي يشير إليه ليبمان بنعت الجمهور （القطيع الضال）، إذ أن إعطاءهم الحرية يعني أنهم سيتسببوا بالمشاكل。 ويذكر المؤلف كيف كانت هذه الرؤية حاضرة عندما فازت الحركة العمالية بأول نصر تشريعي لها في العام 1935م، وهو كذلك آخر نصر تشريعي لهذه الحركة، إذ استشعر رجال الأعمال وجود خطر في دخول هذا （القطيع الضال） لحلبة السياسة。تحدث تشومسكي كذلك عن بعض الأمثلة لهذا في السياسة الأمريكية - وهي كثيرة -، منها تدخل الولايات المتحدة للإطاحة بالحكومة الليبرالية الديمقراطية لدولة جواتيمالا في 1954م بسبب سحب أراضي زراعية مهملة كانت تملكها شركة "يونايتد فروت" الأمريكية وإعطاءها لمزارعين محليين، وكان "إدوارد بيرنيز" وقتها مسئولًا عن إدارة العلاقات العامة في الشركة مما ساهم في حشد الصحافة والرأي العام الأمريكي لتأييد الحكومة。والنماذج الأخرى كثيرة جدًا منها حرب الخليج، حرب فيتنام، وغيرها التي كانت الدعاية السياسية هي الموجه الشعبي الأول لها。وتحدث المؤلف عن بعض الأساليب التي تتخذها البروباغندا لتوجيه الشعب، منها إخافة الشعب من الأعداء الخارجيين، وهذا من أهم أسس الدعاية الأمريكية، وأذكر أنني قرأت مرة قول أحدهم أن أمريكا لا يمكنها العيش دون عدو خارجي أو خطر "إرهابي"。 أعجبني أيضًا حديث الكاتب عن مفهوم الإرهاب وتوظيفه في الدعاية، وممارسته عمليًا على أرض الواقع。يقول المؤلف: "الإرهاب هو سلاح القوي مثله مثل أي سلاح آخر، ولكنه سلاح الضعفاء فقط بالتعريف، وبمجرد ما تفهم أن الإرهاب يعني فقط الإرهاب الذي يمارس ضدنا، عندئذ يصبح الإرهاب هو سلاح الضعيف من حيث التعريف الإجرائي"。نعم باختصار。。 طالما نحن الذين نقوم به فهو لا يعد إرهابًا。الكتاب قصير ومفيد وسهل جدًا بعيدًا عن أي تعقيدات اصطلاحية ومفاهيم صعبة، أعجبني وهو أول كتاب أقرأه لتشومسكي。 。。。more

It was a good essay on how presentation of media may mentally isolate us from our own ideals and how mass consumption may just be a distraction from what we all fundamentally feel is true on an ethical level， but due to the machinations of "the educated" who manipulate information and drip feed us lies， we are unable to repudiate our atomization and unionize under a common front for self-liberalization* from our oppressors。 Though， I'm sure it would have been a three star back in 94 as well， bec It was a good essay on how presentation of media may mentally isolate us from our own ideals and how mass consumption may just be a distraction from what we all fundamentally feel is true on an ethical level， but due to the machinations of "the educated" who manipulate information and drip feed us lies， we are unable to repudiate our atomization and unionize under a common front for self-liberalization* from our oppressors。 Though， I'm sure it would have been a three star back in 94 as well， because the way he presented his information was rather anecdotal， but sufficient enough for the audience he reached for， which was the general one。 I'm happy that it was written and is a good way to introduce folks to the pernicious inculcation we tolerate。My pretention is a 5/5 ！ 。。。more
